Walking is one of the best forms of exercise. Each 2,000 steps that you walk burns about 100 calories, improves your cardiovascular system, protects your brain, strengthens your bones, and improves your mood. Walking is a lifelong activity shown to improve cognitive function in elderly individuals through their ninth decade. However, walking is the deadliest mode of transportation in the United States when done on public streets.

In Evansville, we have 27 different fitness trails scattered throughout the city (www.gerwc.com), none of which are connected. Miles of beautiful Ohio riverfront have yet to be paved for pedestrian use. Subdivisions continue to be built without sidewalks or trails for pedestrians.
